Abstract
This article examines the development of global citizenship among Chinese university students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) through a transnational telecollaboration project with Japanese peers. Using English as a lingua franca, participants collaboratively addressed global challenges such as social justice and environmental sustainability, which fostered heightened global awareness, increased civic agency, and the formation of transnational identities. The study highlights English not only as a communication tool but also as a catalyst for solidarity and collective action across national boundaries. Practical recommendations for educators include designing collaborative tasks focused on shared global concerns and supporting students in intercultural communication strategies during telecollaboration.
