Abstract

The author discusses using the graphic memoir "The Best We Could Do" by Thi Bui as a teaching tool in courses on the U.S. War in Vietnam, foreign relations, and immigration. She reflects on her students' responses to the memoir, explains why it is effective in the classroom, and highlights Bui’s narrative techniques. The memoir’s key themes, such as stereotypes, colonialism, and family relationships, are also examined.
