Abstract

The article focuses on the challenges of assessing learning in the ethical domain, particularly within Aristotelian-based character education. It identifies four major difficulties—an overemphasis on quantification, the multidimensional and interconnected nature of character virtues, the variability and influence of context on behavior, and the inaccessibility of an individual's will or true motivations—along with ten related subproblems that complicate ethical evaluation. The analysis highlights that while theoretical and practical aspects of character education have advanced, its rigorous assessment remains underdeveloped due to these intrinsic and contextual complexities. The authors advocate for a realistic and nuanced approach that acknowledges these limits and encourages educators to focus on specific virtues and dimensions of character rather than attempting comprehensive measurement.
