Roberta Cordano Makes History and Impact.

Abstract

Roberta "Bobbi" Cordano is the first deaf woman and first openly LGBTQ person to be officially installed as president of Gallaudet University, the only university for the deaf and hard of hearing in Washington, DC. Cordano is committed to transforming Gallaudet to meet the needs of the 21st century and advocating for the recognition of sign language and language equity. Under her leadership, Gallaudet has established centers for Black Deaf Studies and Democracy in Deaf America, and has formed partnerships with organizations such as Apple and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. Cordano also emphasizes the importance of sports in building community and fostering communication among deaf students. The university has been recognized for its technological innovation and its seamless transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
