Abstract

The article focuses on the critical role of education as a universal public good essential for individual and societal development, highlighting its impact on income, health, equality, and resilience. Despite widespread constitutional recognition of the right to education, many countries face challenges in ensuring equitable access and adequate funding, particularly in low- and middle-income nations where demographic pressures are high. The article emphasizes the growing gap between education needs and financial resources, noting rising learning poverty and declining international aid, especially in the Global South. It also discusses the increasing reliance on private funding in higher education within high-income countries, which may exacerbate inequalities. Ultimately, the article calls for sustained, equitable public investment in education across all levels to support long-term social and economic prosperity and democratic sustainability.
