Abstract

This article examines the concept of innovation within the framework of media ecology and general semantics, focusing on Neil Postman's notion of the "loving resistance fighter" as a critical stance toward technological innovation in education and society. It argues that while innovation often implies forward progress and disruption, it also entails costs and environmental consequences that are frequently overlooked in the rush to adopt new technologies, especially in educational settings influenced by Silicon Valley's boosterism. The loving resistance fighter metaphor encourages a cautious, reflective engagement with technology, advocating for the recovery and integration of past innovations—particularly print and typography—as epistemological tools that foster rationality and deliberation amid the pressures of technopoly, a culture dominated by technological thinking. The article concludes by suggesting that educators can help students develop this balanced perspective by incorporating print-based traditions alongside contemporary digital innovations, thereby providing "equipment for living" in a rapidly changing media environment.
