Abstract

This article discusses the increasing scrutiny of external review letters in faculty evaluation for promotion and tenure decisions. The authors conducted a survey of external letter request templates from doctoral-granting universities to summarize prevailing practices, highlight potential biases, and propose strategies for improvement. They found that biases, particularly gender and racial biases, can influence tenure and promotion decisions. The authors provide recommendations for department chairs to create a more inclusive external review process, including standardizing the process, limiting the scope of evaluation, providing institutional context, addressing potential bias, and acknowledging the impact of recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
