Abstract

The article evaluates the Pre-Service Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG-PJ) in Indonesia, focusing on the effectiveness of its Field Experience Practice courses (PPL 1 and PPL 2) in developing pedagogical and professional teacher competencies. Using the Return on Expectations (ROE) evaluation method, the study found that these practicum courses contribute only minimally to improving these competencies, with issues including misimplementation, inadequate guidance and communication, limited reflective practice, and overlapping assignments. Participant perceptions varied by educational background, with non-education graduates generally more satisfied than education graduates, highlighting the need for curriculum adjustments tailored to diverse student backgrounds. The study recommends refining selection processes, curriculum differentiation, enhanced mentoring, workload balance, and better school readiness to optimize the program's impact on preparing professional teachers.
