Crossmodal to unimodal transfer of temporal perceptual learning.

Abstract

This article investigates the perceptual learning of crossmodal temporal interval discrimination (TID)—the ability to judge timing intervals defined by auditory and visual stimuli—and its transfer effects on unimodal (auditory or visual) TID performance. The study found that training on a 200-ms crossmodal TID task significantly improved discrimination thresholds not only for crossmodal intervals but also for unimodal intervals, with no further improvement observed from subsequent unimodal training. These results suggest that TID learning enhances an abstract and conceptual representation of subsecond time in the brain, which is modality- and interval-invariant, rather than relying solely on modality-specific or distributed timing mechanisms. The findings contribute to understanding how subsecond temporal processing is represented and improved through perceptual learning across sensory modalities.
