Abstract
This study investigates how different types of article titles influence literature metrics—specifically downloads and citations—in social science journals. Analyzing 2,200 article titles from journals indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index and others, the research categorizes titles into seven types, including interrogative, declarative, creative, abstract, univariate, bivariate, and multivariate. Findings reveal that while interrogative titles attract many readers, they contribute less to citations; creative and declarative titles, though less common, yield higher citation rates and academic value. Among descriptive titles, bivariate titles outperform univariate and multivariate titles in engaging readers and garnering citations. The study recommends that social science authors emphasize research innovation and clarity in titles, minimize abstract wording, and consider using bivariate titles to enhance both readership and scholarly impact.
