Abstract

Applications to the Peace Corps rose nearly fourfold from launch to the midpoint of the decade; by its end, Sobocinska notes that "more than 300,000 Americans had applied" (103). None of these quibbles impeaches Sobocinska's signal contribution to our understanding of the paradoxes and contradictions of development-volunteerism. Sobocinska correctly notes that it was a much bigger issue for the U.S. Peace Corps than for the British or Australian programs, and given her roving attention to ground-level volunteer experiences and to the macro-level dynamics of decolonization and development, perhaps the Cold War deserves the lesser role she assigns it here.
