The Impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic on Students Attending a HBCU.

Abstract

This article examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the Mid-Atlantic United States through a qualitative study of 21 participants. It highlights how the abrupt transition to remote learning, limited access to technology, and campus closures affected students' academic experiences, mental health, and motivation, with female students reporting more challenges than males. The study also explores the pandemic's effects on family health and employment, vaccine hesitancy influenced by familial and community factors, and the unique experiences of nontraditional students who returned to school due to increased online course availability. Findings underscore ongoing adaptations at the university level and call for further research on long-term educational, social, and mental health outcomes within HBCU communities.
