Abstract
The article focuses on the issue of delayed toilet training among children in England and Wales, highlighting that one in four school starters are not toilet trained, according to a 2024 report by the early-years charity Kindred. It discusses how later toilet training can contribute to bladder and bowel health problems, such as constipation and daytime wetting, which affect around 1.5 million children in the UK. The children’s bowel and bladder charity ERIC provides support to families through resources, a free helpline, and educational campaigns like "All Aboard The Toilet Train," promoting an evidence-based three-step approach to toilet training. ERIC also offers training for health and early-years professionals to improve support for children’s continence and aims to reduce the burden on families and health services by encouraging earlier toilet training.
