Abstract

The article focuses on how digital skills can provide a development path for Sub-Saharan Africa amid rapid urbanization without corresponding industrialization. It highlights the region's high youth unemployment and poverty rates, emphasizing that traditional industrialization strategies modeled after China are becoming obsolete due to advances in AI and robotics. Instead, the article argues that equipping the continent's predominantly young population with advanced digital skills can enable them to participate in the global digital economy through remote work and digital entrepreneurship. To support this shift, it recommends policies promoting quality digital education, tax harmonization, and the growth of outsourcing-focused startups, leveraging expanding broadband infrastructure and renewable energy solutions.
