Abstract
This article focuses on the status and development of agricultural education in South Africa, highlighting its current positioning primarily within applied and natural sciences rather than as a distinct educational discipline. A systematic review of research from 2010 to 2023 reveals significant gaps in curricula, teaching approaches, and research dedicated to agricultural education, with an emphasis on technical skills over human and social competencies. The study identifies a need for more participatory, practical, and interdisciplinary pedagogies that integrate local knowledge and address the full spectrum of agricultural education from basic to higher education. It concludes that strengthening specialised agricultural education research, curriculum reform, and collaboration among educational institutions and stakeholders are essential for modernising agricultural education to meet contemporary agricultural development and workforce needs in South Africa.
