Abstract
The article focuses on promoting academic integrity within undergraduate education by embedding it in an institutional pedagogy of inquiry, specifically through inquiry-based learning. Drawing on the German educational ideal of Bildung—which emphasizes self-cultivation, critical reflection, and social responsibility—the author argues that immersion in inquiry-based learning cultivates the virtues essential to academic integrity organically, rather than treating integrity as a separate topic. Inquiry is presented as a collaborative practice with standards, virtues, and internal goods that foster students' personal and intellectual development, reducing the likelihood of dishonest behavior. Furthermore, linking inquiry to real-world social and ecological challenges may broaden students' sense of integrity beyond academia to include responsibility toward their communities and the environment. While acknowledging practical challenges, the article suggests that adopting inquiry-based learning institution-wide offers a sustainable, long-term strategy to support both academic integrity and a meaningful higher education.
