Abstract

• The 50th anniversary of IDEA is cause for celebrating the promise of FAPE made to all students with disabilities in the United States. • This anniversary is also a time for special education leaders to be vigilant advocates so the promise of the law might be kept. • IDEA is viewed positively in this discussion to celebrate the promise of the law, its defining features, and to acknowledge the importance of the federal role in supporting IDEA's enduring mission. • An appreciative inquiry approach is used to highlight the strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results of this landmark legislation, the advocacy of its champions, and how special education leaders might preserve and build on the best of what IDEA has to offer for future generations.
