Abstract

This article focuses on a series of experiments examining how tenured and tenure-track university faculty evaluate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements in academic hiring and promotion. Across seven studies involving 4,953 faculty participants, statements lacking references to race/ethnicity and gender diversity were rated significantly lower in strength, and applicants submitting these statements were perceived as less competent, hireable, and likable. Faculty were also less likely to advance applicants with DEI statements emphasizing only viewpoint, rural, or socioeconomic diversity, while findings on disability diversity were mixed. These results offer new insights into faculty perceptions of DEI statements, though the research has not yet undergone peer review. [Extracted from the article]
