Abstract

This article discusses the interplay between the theory of history and Holocaust historiography. The author examines the rise and fall of postmodernism in historiography and its impact on the writing of history, particularly in relation to the Holocaust. The author argues that while postmodernism has influenced historical writing, its political implications have been left behind and it has not led to a new historiography. The article also explores the limitations of postmodernism and suggests that historians can continue to write history in various ways, while acknowledging the provisional nature of historical accounts. The author concludes by questioning the need for postmodernism to produce a coherent philosophy of history, suggesting that the discipline has already achieved a more open-minded and progressive approach to historical research.
