Abstract
This article evaluates a state-funded Grow Your Own (GYO) program in Florida designed to address the special education teacher shortage by providing paraprofessionals with tuition support to earn degrees and teaching certification. Analysis of data from 232 paraprofessionals between 2009 and 2022 shows a 92% degree completion rate, with 90.8% obtaining certification and 87.7% maintaining active teaching licenses, primarily in special education. The program predominantly serves paraprofessionals attending smaller, community-focused institutions offering online programs, facilitating access for working adults. Findings suggest that GYO programs with sustained financial and academic support can effectively build and retain a local special education teacher workforce, though further research is needed on long-term impacts, teacher performance, and cost-effectiveness.
