Abstract

This article focuses on the experience of teaching an undergraduate Masculinities class in a medium-security, all-male prison during the spring of 2020. The instructor, a white female doctoral candidate, navigated challenges related to gender dynamics, incarceration contexts, and sensitive discussions on masculinity. After initial difficulties with passive teaching methods, the instructor shifted to a student-driven model using motivational interviewing tactics and narrative pedagogy, which emphasized personal storytelling and reflection to foster deeper understanding of masculinity among incarcerated students. This approach helped students critically examine their beliefs and engage collaboratively, highlighting the complexities of masculinity within prison culture.
