Abstract
The article focuses on comprehensive contraceptive counseling and pregnancy prevention for adolescents, emphasizing the importance of individualized care based on medical, menstrual, and sexual histories. It outlines that all currently available contraceptive methods are safe and effective for most adolescents, with the choice guided by preferences regarding efficacy, duration, bleeding impact, side effects, and ease of use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (USMEC) and Selected Practice Recommendations provide guidelines for method eligibility and initiation, including same-day starts when pregnancy can be reasonably excluded. The article also highlights the unique considerations for long-acting reversible contraception, intermediate- and short-acting methods, emergency contraception, and the critical role of barrier methods (condoms) in preventing sexually transmitted infections.
