Abstract
This article examines the experiences of international graduate students in U.S. urban planning programs, comparing them with those of domestic students of color to understand challenges related to campus climate, discrimination, and support. Based on interviews with 42 students, findings reveal that both groups face microaggressions, feelings of isolation, and barriers related to faculty interactions, classroom climate, and department policies, with international students additionally encountering funding difficulties and cultural adjustment issues. The study highlights the concept of "minoritization," where international students experience social and structural challenges similar to students of color. Recommendations include faculty training on cultural competency, increased transparency and funding support, development of arrival guides, and enhanced recruitment and mentorship efforts to improve retention and inclusivity in planning programs.
