Abstract
This study examines how school social workers in Chicago-area neighborhood, charter, and suburban schools generate funding and advocate for mental health supports within their schools. Using the ecological systems framework and qualitative interviews with nine licensed school social workers, the study identifies three main themes: schools improve student access to mental health services through school-based and community partnerships; advocacy efforts by social workers vary by school type, with suburban schools facing greater challenges; and social workers experience marginalization due to inadequate administrative support and limited involvement in funding decisions. Findings highlight the need for increased investment in school social work positions, enhanced collaboration between social workers and school administrators, and better transparency regarding funding sources such as Medicaid reimbursement to effectively meet student mental health needs.
