Abstract

This article examines race-associated differences in balance and cognitive test scores measured by the Sway Medical System among Black and White student-athletes aged 12 to 23 during preseason baseline testing. The study found negligible to small differences between Black and White athletes on balance, reaction time, inspection time, and impulse control scores across all ages and genders. However, White athletes consistently scored higher than Black athletes on the Memory module, with effect sizes ranging from small to medium. The causes of these memory score differences remain unclear, and the authors suggest further research into social risk and psychological factors that may influence test outcomes.
