Abstract
This study examines the pedagogical process and experiential learning outcomes of the "News and Information Capstone—Southeast Ohio Magazine" course at Ohio University, conducted from 2014 to 2023 in a news desert region of Appalachia. Using micro-ethnographic methods, it analyzes challenges such as overcoming regional stereotypes, ethical reporting, teamwork, and tight production schedules, alongside successes in fostering community journalism and student engagement with underrepresented local stories. The course serves both as a workforce preparation tool and a venue for service journalism, providing students with hands-on experience while addressing the decline of local news sources in economically disadvantaged areas. Evaluations from students and professionals highlight the course’s role in developing journalistic skills and cultural proficiency, though the study notes a limitation in alumni career feedback and suggests future research on community impact and capstones as local news bureaus.
