Abstract

This article focuses on research from the Australian National University examining how social media influencers use identity leadership to shape perceptions of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related self-care behaviors. Two experimental studies involving male participants analyzed ADHD-related content from TikTok videos and text posts, finding that influencers who engage in identity leadership increase viewers’ identification with ADHD, promote help-seeking attitudes, and encourage self-care intentions. The research highlights that mental health professional influencers, compared to lay influencers, are particularly effective in fostering self-care intentions through identity leadership. These peer-reviewed findings suggest that influencers play a significant role in shaping public understanding and responses to mental health content on social media. [Extracted from the article]
