Abstract
This article discusses the importance of recognizing and rewarding employees in the workplace. It acknowledges that employers often struggle to align their gestures of appreciation with what their employees actually want and need. The article provides five techniques for employees to increase the likelihood of receiving rewards and recognition that are personally meaningful to them. These techniques include reflecting on personal goals and motivations, listing and ranking desired rewards, observing what is happening on their team, communicating with their manager, and providing feedback to their manager and company. By implementing these techniques, employees can help their employers improve their approach to acknowledging employee contributions while also clarifying their own motivations and increasing the likelihood of receiving desired outcomes.
