Abstract

The article focuses on the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) Competency-Based Veterinary Education (CBVE) Model, emphasizing the importance of fidelity—accurate reproduction of core components—and consistent terminology for its successful implementation in veterinary education. The CBVE Model comprises three main components: the Competency Framework outlining graduate outcomes, Milestones describing learner developmental progression, and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) representing integrated workplace-based tasks essential for clinical competence. The article highlights challenges in terminology use, particularly distinguishing EPAs from simulated activities, and advocates preserving the original Competency Framework while allowing adaptation at the subcompetency level to accommodate local contexts. It also discusses ongoing efforts to develop preclinical milestones to extend the model's applicability across all phases of veterinary training, aiming to enhance assessment, learner progression, and new graduate readiness in the profession.
