Cyberbullying and Traditional Bullying Victimization, Depressive Symptoms, and Suicidal Ideation Among Chinese Early Adolescents: Cognitive Reappraisal and Emotion Invalidation as Moderators.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationships between cyberbullying and traditional bullying victimization and suicidal ideation among Chinese early adolescents, focusing on the mediating role of depressive symptoms and the moderating roles of cognitive reappraisal and emotion invalidation. Results from 1,823 participants indicate that cyberbullying victimization has a stronger association with suicidal ideation than traditional bullying, with depressive symptoms partially or fully mediating these relationships. Cognitive reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy involving reframing negative experiences, was found to weaken the impact of bullying victimization on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, while perceived emotion invalidation—experiencing others as dismissive of one's emotions—intensified the link between depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. These findings highlight the importance of promoting adaptive cognitive strategies and validating emotional responses in interventions aimed at reducing suicidal ideation among bullied adolescents.
