Abstract
The article focuses on the Educational Transition Coordination (ETC) program, a pilot intervention at Wayne State University designed to support formerly incarcerated individuals in overcoming structural and functional barriers to higher education and community reentry. The program provides in-prison outreach, individualized needs assessments, and post-release coordination of educational, housing, employment, and health services, aiming to increase participants' well-being, economic mobility, and reduce recidivism. Early evaluation data indicate significant needs for housing, transportation, job coaching, and counseling among participants, with many expressing interest in continuing education at community colleges or Wayne State University. The program highlights challenges such as stigma, limited transitional housing, and parole requirements, while emphasizing peer support and campus resources as critical to success. The ETC aims for scalability and sustainability to advance racial equity and improve life outcomes for justice-impacted individuals in Michigan and beyond.
