A Call to Action: How Social Work Programs Can Respond to Student Food Insecurity.

Abstract

This article examines the exacerbation of student food insecurity on college campuses during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the critical role of social work education in addressing this issue. It presents research showing that food insecurity disproportionately affects historically underrepresented student groups, including students of color, and negatively impacts academic success and well-being. The article emphasizes that social work professionals and students possess unique skills to develop, implement, and evaluate campus food pantries and related support services, advocate for equitable resources, and address stigma associated with food insecurity. It calls for comprehensive, collaborative strategies involving higher education institutions, community organizations, and policymakers to reduce food insecurity and promote social justice for vulnerable student populations.
