Abstract

This article examines the role of the sublime in Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) and proposes a reimagined understanding that fosters empathetic and reciprocal human–nature relations. Historically, OAE has framed sublime environments as adversarial settings for human conquest, reflecting anthropocentric and dualistic perspectives. Using philosophical phenomenology, postqualitative analysis, and Indigenous ontologies, the study argues that recognizing the material and relational aspects of sublime experiences—prior to cognitive interpretation—can cultivate virtues such as humility, respect, and care for the more-than-human world. This relational approach to the sublime has implications for promoting pro-environmental behaviors within OAE pedagogy.
