Assessing Study Skills Knowledge as a Predictor of Academic Success.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a test of study skill knowledge for academic prediction. The overall purpose was to develop a measure that assessed a more expansive conceptualization of knowledge than is typically used to predict academic success. The test development process was discussed and resulted in a final 80-question Study Skills Knowledge Assessment Test (SSKAT). Test items were administered to undergraduate students in a series of studies to determine the test's ability to predict. Results from these studies found that the SSKAT was an effective predictor of college performance, as measured by grades in an introductory college course and overall college grade point average (C- GPA). Further, the SSKAT was also related to performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Finally, the SSKAT predicted college success above and beyond high school grade point average (HS-GPA) and SAT scores. Thus, the SSKAT was demonstrated to be an effective and innovative approach to academic prediction, and the implications of these findings and potential uses of the test are discussed.
