Redefining Academic Integrity in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence: The Essential Contribution of Artificial Intelligence Ethics.

Abstract

This article examines the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools—such as ChatGPT, Claude, Bard, and Gemini—on higher education, emphasizing the need to move beyond traditional plagiarism-focused responses toward a renewed culture of academic integrity grounded in comprehensive AI ethics training. It argues that academic integrity in the AI era requires developing ethical competence across four key fields: the technical aspects of AI, moral dilemmas posed by AI, the socio-technical context including equity and bias, and relevant normative frameworks. Drawing on a pragmatist approach to ethics, the article highlights three interrelated components of ethical competence—ethical sensitivity, reflexive skills, and dialogical skills—that enable autonomous, responsible decision-making in complex AI-related situations. The authors advocate for proactive, contextualized ethics education for students, educators, and administrators to foster fairness, transparency, and accountability in the responsible use of generative AI within higher education.
