Abstract

The article focuses on skill development in India, examining the country’s efforts to address the skill gap and enhance employment through various government initiatives. It highlights the role of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in implementing programs such as the Skill India Mission and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), which have trained millions but face challenges including inadequate infrastructure, low industry linkage, and insufficient emphasis on non-technical skills. The skill gap, driven by mismatches between education and industry needs, conservative mindsets, and low wages, remains a significant barrier to employment despite India’s demographic advantage. The article concludes that coordinated efforts among stakeholders and a focus on entrepreneurial skills are essential to fully leverage India’s workforce potential and support economic growth.
