Abstract

The article describes the National Drug Code (NDC) as an identifier, its history, its governance in regulation, and its most common uses within the medication management systems. It describes common alternative identifiers used when an NDC is not available for use. Also mentioned are anatomy of an NDC, components of an NDC, and NDCs in acute care medication management.
