Abstract

The article focuses on how companies can improve customer data quality by building effective data feedback loops into their products. It explains that strong feedback loops occur when user interactions naturally generate clear signals about preferences, as seen in products like Google Search, smart thermostats, and Spotify, whereas many traditional or some digital products, such as wearables and large language models (LLMs), have weaker loops due to limited or indirect feedback. To enhance these loops, firms can redesign products to elicit meaningful user data, integrate with complementary products, request user feedback in minimally intrusive ways, or incorporate humans in the loop to interpret and improve AI outputs. When well-designed, these feedback loops can create sustainable competitive advantages by continuously improving products through user-generated data.
