Abstract

This article examines innovative approaches to coexisting with interplanetary telecommunication infrastructures (IIT) that underpin global communication yet often limit civic participation and creative engagement due to their physical, technical, and economic constraints. Centered on the interdisciplinary research-creation project "Manifesting space cities" (2023, Concordia University), it explores three relational techniques—critical cartography, place-based pedagogy, and sensory attunement—to critically engage with the distributed, transspatial nature of IIT and their embeddedness in urban environments. The project highlights challenges in making IIT visible and accessible to diverse publics, emphasizing the need for inclusive, ethical, and participatory frameworks that connect technological infrastructures with social and environmental concerns. It calls for further development of open-source, multidisciplinary platforms and policies informed by cooperation and civic experimentation to foster equitable urban and interplanetary cohabitation.
