Abstract

This article focuses on proposing an extension of the Systems Modelling Language (SysML), a Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) approach, to assess the sustainability of complex engineered systems during their analysis and design phases. The extension incorporates concepts from the doughnut theory, which integrates planetary boundaries and social thresholds to define a "safe and just space" for sustainable development. The authors define SysML profiles that model system life cycle phases with localized socio-ecological impacts quantified as equivalent numbers of persons ("per. eq.") per country, enabling the computation of sustainability indicators across environmental and social dimensions. Two case studies from the transport sector illustrate the approach, demonstrating how different mobility systems (train, bus, bike, and metro) can be evaluated for compliance with planetary boundaries and social thresholds. The work aims to provide system engineers with formalized models and software tools to integrate a comprehensive sustainability assessment into early system design, supporting livable and sustainable system development.
