Abstract
The article focuses on proposing and validating a methodology and architecture for implementing Total Productive Maintenance 4.0 (TPM 4.0) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), integrating Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies with traditional TPM practices. TPM 4.0 extends the classic TPM pillars by incorporating digitalization, sensorization, cybersecurity, and data analytics to enhance equipment productivity and maintenance effectiveness. The authors present a three-stage roadmap—analysis, TPM deployment, and digitization—applied in a Spanish SME manufacturing doors, emphasizing initial technical training, process standardization, and gradual digital tool adoption such as RFID tagging and condition-based monitoring. The implementation resulted in improved Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), reduced quality defects, and the creation of a cyber-physical system architecture enabling predictive maintenance and continuous improvement. The study highlights that successful TPM 4.0 adoption depends more on cultural transformation and skilled human resources than on technology availability alone.
