Abstract

This article focuses on how legal education and experience in oil and gas law equip lawyers to effectively support the Energy Transition, the global movement to reduce climate change-inducing emissions through low and zero-carbon energy infrastructure. It identifies seven key areas—such as project finance, cross-border issues, title and ownership rights, investment protections, local regulation, industrial standards, and maritime law—where oil and gas legal expertise parallels challenges in emerging energy sectors like hydrogen, carbon capture, wind, and solar. The article argues that oil and gas lawyers possess valuable skills and knowledge to advise stakeholders on complex legal, regulatory, and financial matters critical to developing and managing Energy Transition projects. It concludes that oil and gas legal professionals will play an essential collaborative role in advancing a sustainable energy future.
