Abstract
The article highlights three innovative projects involving AI and technology in the UK. First, researchers from the University of Glasgow have developed RoboGuide, a robotic guide dog designed to assist partially sighted people in navigating indoor spaces using advanced sensors and large language model technology for real-time obstacle avoidance and verbal interaction. Second, the University of Edinburgh is exploring the Geobattery project, which aims to reuse excess heat from its supercomputer by storing it in flooded disused mines to sustainably heat millions of UK homes, addressing fuel poverty. Third, the University of Southampton and the National Museum of the Royal Navy are collaborating on using AI to preserve maritime heritage, notably by automating the integration of thousands of images into a digital 3D model of HMS Victory to enhance historical accuracy and public digital access.
