Abstract

This article examines how data science projects can address social concerns such as health equity and digital inclusion by adopting participatory, user-centered approaches rather than top-down, technocratic methods. It argues that involving stakeholders—users, patients, and citizens—as active participants in data-based interventions fosters empowerment, skill development, and sustainable benefits beyond product design or service efficiency. Drawing on examples from data science for social good (DSSG), arts and health initiatives, and digital inclusion efforts, the article highlights challenges related to health datafication, privacy, and representation of marginalized groups. It advocates for integrating creative, community-based participation with data literacy to enhance public engagement, trust, and equitable health outcomes.
