Abstract

The article focuses on prioritizing sub-watersheds within Nigeria's Cross River Basin (CRB) for flood risk management using morphometric analysis integrated with GIS techniques. Seventeen third-order sub-watersheds were delineated and analyzed through twenty-three morphometric parameters using two complementary methods: the Morphometric Ranking Method and El-Shamy's compound factor technique, which assess flood susceptibility based on drainage characteristics. Results identified significant variability in flood vulnerability, with sub-watersheds 8 and 17 consistently ranked as high risk, while others like SW1 showed very low risk. The study concludes that combining parameter-based ranking with geomorphological sensitivity analysis provides a robust framework for targeted flood mitigation interventions in data-scarce regions such as the CRB.
