Abstract

The article focuses on the progress of Watercare's wastewater infrastructure projects in the Warkworth to Snells Beach area, including the tunneling work by the machine named Piper for a 1.5-kilometre section of a five-kilometre pipeline. This pipeline will connect the new Lucy Moore Wastewater Pump Station to the Snells Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant, which is under construction and expected to be operational by mid to late 2025. These projects are part of a broader $300 million scheme aimed at improving wastewater services, supporting regional growth, and reducing environmental impacts such as overflows into the Mahurangi River. The article details the technical aspects of tunneling, pipeline installation, and construction milestones, highlighting the coordinated efforts of engineering crews and the use of modular construction to expedite progress.
