Abstract

This article examines the emerging use of neurotechnology—wearable devices that monitor brain activity—in the workplace to track fatigue, attention, and cognitive load, aiming to enhance safety, productivity, and employee well-being. It highlights applications such as SmartCap’s LifeBand for fatigue detection in industries like trucking and mining, and Emotiv’s MN8 earbuds for real-time attention monitoring, while also discussing adaptive work environments that respond to employees’ brain states. The article emphasizes significant privacy and ethical concerns, including risks of employee discrimination and loss of trust, and calls for clear policies protecting mental privacy, transparency about data use, employee consent, and secure data storage. It suggests that responsible implementation of brain wearables could benefit both employers and employees but requires careful balancing of benefits and risks.
