Abstract

The article explores the use of National Drug Code (NDC) in barcodes and the potential impat of changing to a 12-digit code. Topics discussed include the proposal of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the NDC be extended to a 12-digit number, importance of understanding how the NDC appears in the data that a barcode delivers when it is scanned, and the role of the ASHP in promoting change.
