Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating urban solid waste management in the city of Rasht, Iran, using life cycle assessment (LCA) to identify the most environmentally sustainable waste management scenario. Four scenarios combining composting, recycling, sanitary landfilling, and waste incineration were analyzed through life cycle inventory using the IWM-1 model and impact assessment via the Eco-Indicator 99 index. The study found that scenario 4—comprising 40% composting, 25% recycling, 15% incineration, and 20% sanitary landfill—yielded the most positive environmental outcomes by reducing pollutant emissions, conserving resources, and generating energy. The results highlight the importance of integrating composting and recycling with controlled incineration and reduced landfilling to minimize environmental and human health impacts in Rasht's waste management system.
