A hybrid magnetic reset design for the high voltage pulse generator based on forward circuit and magnetic superposition.

Abstract

This article focuses on the design and validation of a high-voltage pulse generator based on forward conversion and magnetic flux superposition (FMS) with a hybrid magnetic reset method combining Resistor–Capacitor–Diode (RCD) clamp reset and a third winding coil reset. The proposed design enables adjustable pulse widths by optimizing transformer coil turns and structure, eliminates the need for isolated power supplies and trigger signals, and improves system efficiency by limiting voltage stress on switching devices. Experimental results demonstrate a 20-stage pulse generator producing up to 10 kV pulses with widths of 2–5 microseconds, with scalability in voltage and current through adding stages and parallel switches. This topology addresses challenges in pulsed power applications requiring high voltage, wide pulse width, and reliable reset mechanisms, relevant for fields such as biomedicine and food processing.
